Tribute to Barbara Harvey

It is with great sadness that we report the
death of Barbara Harvey; Treasurer, Committee member and
above all activist for our local support group.
In recent years the group has taken great
leaps forward in terms of membership, activities and
financial stability and Barbara's drive, commitment and
determination were the foundation on which this progress was
made. Her enthusiasm infected those around her and instilled
us all with a "lets get this done!" attitude.
Barbara also worked hard for the MS Society
and was a successful campaigner for women's rights issues;
her broad interest in helping others earned her widespread
respect and affection. This admiration was reflected in the
capacity attendance at her funeral, she really was one in a
million and will be sadly missed.

Generous donation from Fitness N.I.(Belfast)

The Belfast Support Group was delighted to
receive a sizeable donation from the women of the Fitness
N.I. (Belfast) aqua aerobics class taken by Elaine Chapman.
Presenting a cheque for £1000 to Wynn Sharpe is Angela
Grieves (right). Looking on is Tessa Barr (right) of the
Fitness group and Dr Susan Clarke, treasurer of the Support
Group.
In the pool, overseeing the handover were the
members who collected the money over the past year by
donating their loose change at every class, a sponsored walk
and a raffle.
Wynn and Susan expressed the Support Group's
gratitude at such a generous donation and explained
that the money would be used locally to support patients
with osteoporosis and to increase awareness of the
condition.

An Evening at Hillsborough Castle

On Thursday
9th October 08, members and friends had another chance to
meet with Dame Mary Peters, this time at Hillsborough
Castle where she was the guest of honour at our evening of
traditional music and historical anecdotes. We are
pleased that the evening was an unqualified success with
an excellent turnout to enjoy the first class
entertainment.
The Reverend Jonathan Barry enlightened
us with romantic tales of Hillsborough Castle, which was
followed by an excellent set of traditional music that
had everyone's feet tapping. A generous supply of wine
and lite bites ensured that a party atmosphere
prevailed.
Many thanks to all who supported us on
the night!

The
Belfast Bone "Landmark" Walk. Sept 21st 2008

This year we are
extremely pleased and honoured
to report that Dame Mary Peters and The
High Sheriff,
Margaret McKenzie
took part in The
Belfast Big Bone “Landmark” walk, at the City Hall on Sunday
21st
September
The
Belfast NOS support group extends our thanks to everyone
who joined us for our annual Big Bone Walk and raised
money for NOS. High profile activities such as this help
us take the message of the importance of bone health to
the general public.
For
the 2008 walk we
added an extra dimension by following a route that took in some of the most historically and
architecturally interesting buildings in Belfast city
centre. Information on the 1.3 mile route and the
historical sights was provided at the starting
point. We
hope that the chance of walking with Dame Mary and
discovering some interesting facts about our city's
buildings was an enjoyable experience for all our
participants.

Update
We have and will
continue to support our National Osteoporosis representative
in her endeavors to engage local politicians on the need to
improve services in Northern Ireland and set up new user
groups.
As well as the
regular meetings the group is planning a number of events
this year with a view to raising additional funds and to
build on the success of last year’s murder mystery.
Click here or on the Programme
link above for more details of this years timetable.
On Sunday 21st
September the annual Big Bone Walk will start at City Hall
in Belfast. As part of the walk we will be taking in sights
of interest around Belfast City Centre including the Albert
Memorial Clock, Custom House and the Linenhall Library, so
that participants can learn some interesting facts about the
town as well as contributing to their bone health!
And we have a
special event in October in the beautiful surroundings of
Hillsborough Castle- a wine and cheese evening with some
traditional music. We hope you can make it to these and look
forward to seeing you there.
Please note that the
AGM is on a Tuesday evening in 2009 rather than the usual
Wednesday.
Thanks again for all
of your support.

Appeal for local volunteers-
As the contents of this site
demonstrate, there are many activities and
responsibilities associated with running the
local support group. Because of this commitment
we need as much help as we can get to
deliver the best support for patients with
osteoporosis in Northern Ireland.
Could you spare a few hours each
month to support the group?
If so, please
use the contact link above to get in touch.
Many Thanks!
